“I want to start by clarifying that Map Academy is run solely by Matt, and this review is not a personal attack on him. Matt is a good person and has helped me a lot directly. However, my experience with Map Academy has been dominated by serious bugs and inconsistent communication. I have released three maps using Map Academy code, and all three launched in a state that was largely unplayable for the majority of players. In May, I released two maps. The first was a car game that took around two weeks to create and used the custom round manager. Players were spawning incorrectly, with everyone appearing in the same location. When I reported this, I was initially told it was my mistake, but it was later acknowledged that the issue came from how the spawning system worked. The second map took about two months to develop. It was a roguelike I created before the genre became heavily popular. After release, it became clear that the UI creator did not support players who joined in progress. Fixing this required a full recreation of the UI creator and took over a month. By the time it was resolved, the map’s initial discovery had already failed, and I lost motivation to continue working on it. More recently, I started recreating the map using Matt’s newer roguelike code. Once again, players are frequently getting hardlocked in the very first rooms. I reported this issue weeks ago, and while Matt does respond occasionally, fixes are repeatedly estimated at “1–2 days,” yet the timeline keeps extending with little follow-up or clear updates. I understand that Map Academy is run by a single developer, but the end result is that critical issues are reaching live releases, and communication around timelines is unreliable. Each map’s launch has been heavily damaged because early players encounter broken gameplay, and even when fixes arrive later, the initial opportunity is already lost. I respect Matt and the work he’s doing, but based on my experience, Map Academy is currently not reliable for releasing live maps unless you are prepared for major bugs, delays, and uncertain communication.”
